Chapter 71
“Where have you been, dear?” Asked Merly. She just left the kitchen and was about to call Emerson for breakfast when Emerose came in from outside.
“Nothing,” the eldest Morgan answered before she went straight to her bedroom.
“Are you not going to eat yet?” Her mother asked but didn’t bother looking at Merly, who shook her head and went to their bedroom to call her husband.
The couple were eating when they heard a knock on the door. They looked at each other before Emerson motioned Merly to get up and check who was knocking. Merly sighed as she walked to the door and opened it.
“Good morning. Is this Ms. Emerose Morgan’s house?” Merly’s eyes widened, and she wanted to say no since it was the police who were asking, and she started to feel worried.
“What do you want from her?” she asked bravely, but fear engulfed her.
“We need to invite her to the police station.”
“What? Why? What did she do?” She asked continuously and decided to close the door, but the police were alert and immediately stopped her.
“What’s going on here?” It was Emerson. He wondered what was taking his wife so long, so he went out to check on her. “Why is there a police here? Did you do something wrong, Merly?” the Morgan patriarch asked angrily, glaring at his wife.
“Of course not!” Merly exclaimed. “They were looking for Emerose.”
Emerson confusedly looked at the two police officers before him, “What happened?”
“We want to invite Ms. Morgan to the police station for the kidnapping case.”
“What!!” The couple exclaimed and looked at each other exactly when the door of Emerose’s room opened, making them look at it.
“Dad, Mom, what’s going on?” Emerose ask. She heard the commotion, so she went out.
“Ms. Emerose Morgan?”
“Yes,”NôvelDrama.Org owns © this.
“We want to invite you to the police station for questioning.”
“Why? What did I do?”
“Someone pointed you out as the mastermind for kidnapping Ms. Emerald Morgan.” the police officer answered.
“What?” the three exclaimed.
“Wait, no, I didn’t do anything!” Emerose shouted, but the police still took her and put the handcuffs on her. “Dad! Mom! Please help me!” she continued screaming as the police dragged her to the police car. Emerson and Merly get in their car and follow them.
Emerose sat in a stark, sterile interrogation room at the police station, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and anger. She glanced nervously at the mirrored window, aware that officers were watching her from the other side.
She had just changed out of her skimpy outfit from the Red House when the police showed up at their doorstep.
Emerson and Merly stood outside the interrogation room, their faces pale with worry and anger at the same time. The police explained to the couple that Jace and Emerald had filed a kidnapping case against Emerose.
Inside the room, Detective Harding sat across from Emerose, his hands folded on the table between them. He watched her with piercing eyes, waiting for her to speak.
Emerose shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her mind racing. She knew she had to tread carefully. “I don’t understand why I’m here,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “What’s going on?”
Detective Harding raised an eyebrow, his gaze unwavering. “We have reason to believe you were involved in the kidnapping of Emerald Morgan,” he said, his voice calm but firm. Emerose’s heart skipped a beat. She forced herself to look confused.
“Kidnapping? I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve been at work all day.”
“Work?” Detective Harding said, his tone carrying a hint of disdain. “But that’s not the issue right now. We’re interested in your relationship with Hubert.”
Emerose felt a jolt of fear. Under the table, she clenched her fists, silently cursing Hubert for getting caught and dragging her into this mess. “Hubert? I don’t know anyone named Hubert,” she lied, her voice wavering slightly.
“Don’t play games with us,” Detective Harding said, leaning forward. “Hubert is the man who we believe orchestrated the kidnapping. We have evidence linking him to you.” Emerose’s mind raced. She had to keep her story straight.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said, trying to sound indignant. “I’ve never met anyone named Hubert.”
Before Detective Harding could respond, the door to the interrogation room opened, and an officer motioned for him to step outside. He gave Emerose a warning look before leaving the room.
Emerson and Merly stood in the hallway, their faces etched with worry, confusion, and anger. They watched as Detective Harding approached them, their expressions pleading for answers.
“Detective, what’s happening?” Emerson asked, his voice trembling. “Why is our daughter facing such a terrible crime?” The detective took a deep breath.
“Mr. and Mrs. Morgan, we have substantial evidence that suggests Emerose was involved in the planning and execution of Emerald Morgan’s kidnapping. The suspect already confessed.”
Merly gasped as her hand flew to her mouth. “That can’t be true,” she whispered, tears filling her eyes. “Emerose would never do something like that.”
“We’re still investigating from all angles,” Detective Harding said gently. “But right now, we must question her about her involvement and relationship with Hubert.”
The door opened again, and Detective Harding re-entered his expression sternly. “Let’s get back to the matter at hand,” he said, sitting across from Emerose. “We have evidence that Hubert was in contact with you several times before the kidnapping. Can you explain that?” She felt a surge of anger and frustration, thinking her carefully constructed life was falling apart, and it was all because of that idiot, Hubert.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Emerose said, trying to sound outraged. “I don’t know this, Hubert, and I didn’t have anything to do with the kidnapping.”
Detective Harding slid a stack of photos across the table. “These were taken from Hubert’s phone. They show you multiple meetings with him. Are you still going to deny knowing him?”
Emerose glanced at the photos, her stomach sinking. There she was, unmistakably meeting with Hubert outside the Red House and at various locations around town. She swallowed hard, trying to come up with an explanation.
“Okay, fine,” she said, her voice shaking. “I’ve met him a few times, but I didn’t know his name was Hubert. He said his name was Henry, and he was just a customer at the Red House. I didn’t know he was involved in anything illegal.”
Detective Harding leaned back in his chair, watching her closely. “Ms. Morgan, this isn’t the time to lie. We’ve got enough evidence to link you to the kidnapping. If you cooperate, it might help your case.”
Emerose clenched her teeth, fury bubbling up inside her. She had been careful to keep her real life and her job at the Red House separate. And now it was all unraveling because of that fool, Hubert. She looked up at Detective Harding, her eyes flashing with anger. “I don’t know anything about any kidnapping,” she said through gritted teeth. “I’ve been at work, and if Hubert or Henry, or whatever his name is, was involved, I didn’t know anything about it.”
Detective Harding studied her momentarily, “Why do you keep on lying? You should know very well that we have already confirmed that Hubert also works in the Red House, and he has already confessed that you’re the one who asked him to look for someone who will do the task. Are you going to deny that?”
The eldest Morgan was so furious that she gritted her teeth and glared at the detective, who was now smirking at her. “He may be working there, but it doesn’t mean we’re together in the kidnapping he was caught with. I am an entertainer and stay in the VIP rooms. We are not allowed to go out and talk to other workers, especially male employees. I’m pretty sure you know that as well. Being photographed with him doesn’t also mean that we were plotting something. What’s wrong with having casual conversations outside work?”
“Ms. Morgan, I believe your parents don’t know where and what kind of work you are involved with, right?” Detective Harding asked.
“And don’t you dare tell them that! My personal life has nothing to do with the case you’re throwing at me?” Emerose replied arrogantly. The detective couldn’t do anything and nodded to the officer standing by the door. “Take her to the holding cell. We’ll continue this conversation later.”
Emerose saw her parents standing in the hallway, their faces a mixture of disbelief and fear, as they led her out of the interrogation room. “Emerose,” her mother whispered, tears streaming down her face. “What have you done?” Eldest Morgan’s heart ached with a mixture of guilt and defiance.
“I didn’t do anything, Mom,” she said, her voice cracking. “I’m innocent.”
As they led her down a long corridor, Emerose’s mind raced. She had to think of a way out of this mess. She had to find a way to protect herself and keep her secret life hidden from her parents. She was sure they would disown her if they found out about her job.
Locked into the holding cell, the cold metal bars clanged shut behind her, causing her mind to swirl with fear and anger. She cursed Hubert again for being such an idiot and got caught. She warned him about Jace’s connection and status, so he had to be careful. She was angry at Emerald because she had escaped.
