She wasn't one to seek the limelight, so she chose to let her past lie low for a while. On her days off, she'd casually doodle a few design sketches for friends, savoring her laid-back lifestyle. Chloe had plans to start a perfumery studio soon.
When Chloe got to Connor's place, he was busy on a call. She didn't want to interrupt, so she quietly settled on the couch and waited. Sitting turned into lying down, and before she knew it, she'd dozed off.
When she woke up, it was already dark outside. Teddy had just finished giving his work report. Seeing Chloe awake, he tactfully made his exit. Chloe rubbed her eyes and tossed off the blanket that had been draped over her. Still groggy, she shuffled over to Connor.
She naturally perched sideways on his lap, leaning her head against his shoulder. "How long was I out?" she asked.
"Three hours," he replied.
Chloe frowned. "Great, now I'll be tossing and turning all night."
She already struggled with sleep, and napping too long during the day only made it worse. Connor stretched his arm around her waist, pulling her in closer. "No worries if you can't sleep. I'll keep you company tonight."
Chloe caught the playful glint in his eye and rolled hers in response. "Honestly, Mr. CEO, can't you think of anything else?"
"What? I meant stargazing and chatting about poetry and life's big questions. Where did your mind wander off to?"
Chloe just shook her head, speechless.
"Who was on the phone earlier?" she asked, having thought she heard the name Lisa.
"The lawyer. They've tracked down the paparazzi who took those photos, and Lisa's about to face the music."
Connor's expression turned serious. "With charges of drugging, she's in deep trouble. I'll see to it that she gets what she deserves."
Chloe was taken aback. She'd always seen Lisa as just a jealous, simple-minded person, never realizing the real threat she posed. But Lisa had nearly destroyed her, sitting on a damning video for three years, waiting to strike.
Thinking it over, Chloe realized Lisa wasn't just foolish and spiteful; she was cunning too. "Well, let her reform in there... but..."
"But what?" Connor asked.
"Lisa's moms are going to be devastated," Chloe said, thinking of Leah and Ann. For them, Lisa was both a blood daughter and a cherished adopted child.
Knowing Lisa would spend her
future behind bars would break their hearts. Connor seemed to read her thoughts. "Your biggest weakness is your soft heart."
Chloe decided to switch gears. "Never mind them. Are you free on the 1st of next month?"
Connor's eyes drifted to Chloe's rosy lips as he leaned in, a little distracted. "What's on the agenda, my love?"
Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck. "Come with me to a wedding."
Connor's lips found hers. "Who's tying the knot?"
"Lucas and Linda."
Connor frowned slightly but didn't stop kissing her softly. "Why go to their wedding?"
"There's bound to be some drama. Are you in?"
Connor was too lost in her to answer right away, completely caught up in the moment.
Eventually, he pulled back. "I've got a video call soon. How about I have Teddy take you to grab a bite?"
Chloe's stomach rumbled. "No need to bother Teddy. I'll hit the cafeteria and grab us something. Want me to bring you anything?"
