Just rest
Demelza looked up the window as the reflection of the sun got to her table. she could see the orange sun cast an orange glow as it set. she slowly noticed how the clicking of keyboards faded away. She had been working so hard she didn’t notice when everyone left the office and the little chatter she heard all turned silent.
The atmosphere was left with an eerie silence which was creepy and annoying as Nathan had made sure to overload her with too much paperwork. At intervals, her eyes darted from the papers on her desk to her PC screen.
Her eyes are fixed on the computer screen having to make sure his schedule was properly dated and timed. The flickering lights in the office casted a pale look on her face while her eyeballs flowed from the reflection of the PC screen.
She fastened her pace which made her fingers travel very fast across the keyboards. She paused the instant she noticed the only sound she heard was the echoing sound from the clanking of her finger on the keyboard. She hesitated, then continued typing and somehow enjoyed the rhythm as that kept her company. feeling a bit dizzy, she got up and walked to the coffee maker.
She hurriedly made herself a cup of coffee to keep her going for the night. she closed her eyes from the satisfying scent of the coffee that filled the air.
Demelza finished up with the coffee and went back to her seat to continue with her job. As she sat down, she noticed how the city lights kept twinkling and making the surroundings a bit lively.
Sadly, in about two hours, she felt her back aching from sitting in the same position. She tried to exercise her shoulders but they slumped instead. She looked at her wristwatch and noticed it was already late and she wasn’t even close to finishing up what she had to do. She was in-between giving up and getting scolded the next day again or just finishing up and please Nathan.
She decided to finish up to avoid embarrassment so she refused to give in to exhaustion. She kept on working for the next hour and soon, the office surroundings was enveloped in darkness. With the night fallen and the street faln to slumber, Demelza was the only thing with energy functioning.
Demelza could slowly feel her body giving up which made her check the time again. her eyes widened from seeing it was past 2am. She tiredly turned to her computer screen but she could feel how the fatigue settled in her body making it a bit stressful to breathe properly. She sighed and closed her eyes imagining her bed as she longed for the comfort of her home.
The warmth of her bed and the comfy feeling of her duve. she felt miserable realizing how taking this second job has robbed her off whatever little social life she had. She ignored her thoughts and went back to work but got started from the notification sound from her phone. She checked and felt even more frustrated to see it was an added job.
With her eyes fixed on her phone, she slumped against her chair in utter frustration. She could feel her hand trembling and her feet getting cold from being so tired. The weight of the whole day and night felt so exhausting that she soon began to cry. she didn’t realize when she began to cry and the sound of her sobs filled the office. She thought she was the only one in the office so she allowed her tears to flow freely.
Still crying, she became startled by the sound of someone’s footsteps. She had thought she was alone which made everything so creepy.
She looked around and felt relieved seeing it was Nathan. She felt a rush of embracement as she was crying and now he knew. She instantly knew he was going to mock her with it so she prepared her mind for whatever he was going to say as he walks towards her.
As Nathan approached her, he felt pity for her because she looked so stressed and it was way past midnight. He was so engrossed in work he didn’t check on her or even check his time.
He had rounded up for the night and came out of his office, heading home, only to see her there, sitting and crying.
It was obviously too late for her to go home alone by that time which left him with no choice.
“Get your things we’re leaving.” He instructed her but Demelza sat there trying to tidy up her eyes and rid them of any tears left.
Seeing that she didn’t respond, he walked to her, packed all her stuff in his hands, and pulled her up. He kept pulling her all the way to the car and opened up the door for her. He used his head to gesture that she go in.
He didn’t realize she wasn’t wearing her shoes until he saw her legs while she was sitting in the car. “And you couldn’t say anything?” He asks her pointing to her feet but Demelza still didn’t say a word.
Nathan went back into the office to get her shoes as he wanted her to rest before morning.
He got back and started the car and drove out.
If there was anything Demelza liked about Nathan’s car, it was the fact that it was adorned with leather seats and polished interiors.
Demelza noticed he didn’t take the turn to her apartment but she kept quiet and didn’t say a word. She didn’t even look at him him as she was too tired to say anything or fight. The drive was wordless with Nathan looking at her at intervals to be sure she was fine.
When they got to the house, Demelza was fascinated but she made sure to hide the expression that she was utterly impressed. She walked behind Nathan as they made their way inside the luxurious home.
“Make yourself at home,” he told her as he dropped everything on the couch in the living room. Demelza sat down on the couch while Nathan made his way to the kitchen to prepare dinner for the both of them. Nathan stood in the kitchen and began washing and chopping Vegetables to prepare dinner.
He chopped the carrots, onions and bell peppers without forgetting to slice some lettuce. He also seasoned a few pieces of chicken he had brought out of the freezer earlier.
Demelza salivated as she perceived the aroma form Nathan’s cooking. Demelza watched how he peeled and mashd the potatoes adding a touch of butter and cream to it, all the while more spellbound to see him this way. She didn’t think he was this homely. Not when he had all the help running around him to attend to his needs.
Why was he doing this?
Demelza looked away as she got tired from watching. soon, dinner was ready and Nathan served bihe of them.
“Come on, come have dinner,” Nathan said to her, breaking her drift.
She quietly got up and walked to the dinning.Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
They both ate in silence. The atmosphere was awkward around Demelza.
“Thank you,” she thanked Nathan as she picked up her plate to take to the sink.
“Leave it,” he told her. “Just rest.” he added.
Demelza smiled a little and went to lay on the couch without an argument, leaving Nathan at the dining table.
She soon fell asleep while Nathan washed the dishes and cleaned up the dining.
When he was done with everything, he stopped to watch her for a bit, carried away with how beautiful she looked in her state of unconsciousness. Catching himself, he recovered and strolled to her, thinking of waking her up but stopped himself at the last minute and instead, carried her to the bedroom and changed her into his pajamas.
She didn’t even wake up at all until he was done. It was evident to him that she was really exhausted. He knew she would be as she worked two jobs.
When he got done, he turned off the lights and layed on the couch in the room leaving the bed to her so that she could turn and toss as she wanted.
He fell asleep watching her sleep but jolted from her loud scream.
