Regrets
“I am so sorry, marmee.” She has been crying endlessly since she told her grandmother as to what happened between her and Devlin. She told her everything except that night when Devlin mentioned someone else’s name during their last fiery moment. It is something that she does not have the courage to tell her grandmother. She would definitely break down in front of her.
“I am sorry, my child. I hope you told me everything sooner so you could spare yourself from the heartaches. I know that you love him so much.” She paused, pain and disappointment could be seen on her marmee’s face before she took a deep breath.
“I wish it could have happened in a different way. I met Devlin and he seemed to be a nice, young man. I think I was wrong about him then. I saw him as a genuinely caring grandson to his grandmother. He was also nice to everyone here including the workers. And when you told everything that happened, I could not help but regret that I entrusted you to him.” Amber cried harder. Her marmee hugged her tightly.
“Shush now. It will not do you any good crying yourself to exhaustion. Please try to go to sleep. You need it.” Mrs. Mills came with a glass of water. Her marmee helped her to her room.
“Sleep, my child.” She heard her marmee’s gentle voice from a distance. Sleep consumed her quickly the moment she laid down on her bed.
Amber’s grandmother immediately checked her phone. She left it on her bedside table earlier since she got busy making lunch with Mrs. Mills for the workers.
She saw her phone was off. She needed to contact Devlin as soon as possible. She rarely makes mistakes with people. She can detect whether a person is genuinely nice or not. And she found Devlin to be a nice man. She could not believe that she may be wrong about what she thought of him.
She blamed herself for fully entrusting Amber to Devlin. She thought that they had something special going on between them. And she was too happy to notice that something was off. Now, she realized all the talks she had with Amber. She did not share that much about her time with Devlin. She only talked more about what she did with her day.
And she felt disappointed and upset that the two married in haste. They never informed her. Based on Amber’s narration, she was forced into marrying him. Yes, Olivia set up the wedding for them. But still, Amber wanted out. Then, she found out about the inheritance that Amber got from Olivia. She may have understood the reaction of Devlin. However, that does not give him any right to insult nor hurt her granddaughter.
She blames herself. She remembered when she had a talk with Olivia. She badly wanted her grandson to marry Amber. She personally likes Amber for Devlin. Amelia did tell her friend not to go on with their wish anymore. Her suggestion was to make them meet. And it would be up to their grandkids to figure out what they could be in the future. However, with their meddling, Amber is hurt.
‘Olivia what have we done? It pains me to see my little Amber suffering her first heartache. She is so devastated.’
Suddenly, her phone started ringing. It was from an unregistered number but she has a feeling that it is that boy. She took a deep breath before answering the call.
“Hello, ma–marmee.” Devlin’s voice cracked slightly. He has been calling for Amber and her grandmother since he found out that Amber left.
“He–hello.” He said again because marmee was quiet from the other line.
“Yes, Mr. Wesley.” Amelia’s voice sounded firm and serious. She wanted to hear Devlin’s side of the story.Property belongs to Nôvel(D)r/ama.Org.
“I- I am so sorry. I know I made some huge mistakes towards your granddaughter but please believe me, I truly love her.” He said with a defeated voice.
“How can you say that you love my granddaughter? She would not be here crying hysterically.” She started to get teary-eyed. Remembering her granddaughter’s face earlier really pained her.
“Forgive me for not seeing her worth immediately. I regretted everything. All I want right now is to have Amber back in my life.” He said sincerely.
“Why are you telling me all of these? You should ask forgiveness from my granddaughter.” She said calmly.
“I have been trying to call her ever since I found out that she le–left me.”
“She has been sleeping right after I had a talk with her. Just give her time. I will tell her that you called. Whatever her decision, you should respect that.” She said with a warning. Amber may have something else in mind. And she would never interfere this time.
After the call, Devlin went to get a hard drink. He just wanted to forget the pain. He blamed himself for everything. He still could not forget why he suddenly blurted out Raven’s name. He had already moved on from her. And that conversation with Raven during her engagement party, made him feel relieved. Relief that he is free. That he has no more romantic feelings for her.
He drowned himself with alcohol. When Amber left, emptiness overtook his whole being. There is no one to blame but him. However, a part of him wished that Amber could have stayed and listened to his explanation. She never gave him a chance. Still, he can’t blame her. She took everything from him… his insults, his accusations, and his foolishness. He is the greatest fool.
He laughed to himself. His parents are right about him. He is a big failure. He couldn’t even keep a woman in his life. First, he lost Raven. Then, Amber who is now also gone from his life.
An incessant ringing from Devlin’s phone woke him up. He did not realize that he fell asleep on the floor next to the couch. He was too drunk to even move to his room. He saw all the empty bottles he consumed last night.
He answered the call. It was his secretary. He told his secretary to cancel all his meetings today. He would fly to California to personally talk to Amber. His head hurts so bad. He took some pain reliever. Then, proceed to take a quick shower.
He called Jackson to drive him to the airport. His private plane was already waiting for him. Four hours later, he was in front of Grandma Amelia’s farm. He took a deep breath hoping that Amber would let him explain this time.
He rang the doorbell. It was Mrs. Mills who came out to check. She remembered him and opened the door for him. Devlin followed inside. He was left in the living room.
It did not take long for him to wait. Amber’s grandmother came out. She was surprised to see him but she greeted him politely.
“Amber has been hiding in her room. She only comes out when she gets hungry. She only came out once when she came back here.” She said with sadness.
“I am so sorry, marmee. I wanted to personally ask for her forgiveness and explain to her what happened.” He thinks Amber did not tell her grandmother what happened that night between them. If she did, marmee would never accept him in her house.
“Alright, let me just talk to her.” She left to check on Amber in her room.
The moment she opened the door, she saw Amber laying down. She must be in deep thought for her not to notice her grandmother.
“My child, how are you feeling? I wish I could relieve you from all the pains you are feeling.” Amber did not respond at all to her grandmother but only smiled at her.
“By the way, you have a visitor. I hope you can see him so you can fix yourself.” Her grandmother said gently. This time Amber shook her head vigorously.
“Amber, I know that I am also to be blamed for whatever happened to you. But I hope you could talk to him. Hear him out. You can decide later on what you want to do with your life. Don’t just run away and leave things unsettled between you. It will haunt you for the rest of your life.” Her grandmother made sense. Although she already made her decision, she still needed to hear him out for a proper closure between them…
