Chapter 166
Chapter 166
As Kaleb was about to make his escape, Trevor beat him to it and left the lounge. He then followed the latter behind him and gritted his teeth while warning Zachary. "Just wait and see, Zachary. You'd better not fall in love with any of these women, or Trevor and I will surely make you pay!" Deeming himself the same kind of man as Trevor, Kaleb was annoyed by Zachary for pulling a prank on them by summoning the group of ladies. Besides, he believed Trevor was not in the mood to entertain the ladies, knowing the latter, not to mention the fact that he couldn't stop thinking about Emma.
While Kaleb made himself scarce upon finishing his sentence, Zachary was left behind, laughing out loud gleefully. However, he later waved his hand and dismissed the ladies before he stepped out of the lounge and saw Trevor smoking with Kaleb. Soon, he walked closer to them and leaned on the handrail on the side of the corridor, gazing at Trevor. "There are many ways that could help you pull yourself together, but giving up is definitely not one of them. So, have you considered letting her go?"
Trevor rolled his eyes upward in response, feeling annoyed to hear Zachary's useless suggestion because he wouldn't have been in so much pain had he been able to do that. At that moment, he suddenly understood why Emma would marry him despite his indifferent attitude and occasional insults. She must have felt so unhappy with me back then; she must have hoped that I would look at her and give her my heart; she must have also hoped to start a happy family with me and raise our kids together for the rest of our life. While Trevor was able to empathize with Emma in hindsight, he quickly wondered how she was able to put those feelings behind her and move on. At the thought of that, he was overwhelmed by regret and remorse as he blamed himself for having broken her heart back then.
When Trevor didn't respond, Zachary went on to offer him a word of suggestion. "I have an idea." It was then that Trevor shifted his attention to Zachary and looked at the latter with an emotionless look
on his face but deep down, he was hoping his friend could offer him some useful advice. Soon, Zachary said, "Didn't you always think that she liked to play hard to get with you? Why don't you let her have a taste of her own medicine? Pretend as if you're going to give up on her and date another lady to see how she reacts. Who knows, she may get edgy and tempted to rekindle the old flames with you when she sees you dating another woman?"
Without a single thought of hesitation, Trevor answered, "No way. I haven't given up on her." I'll never give up on her.
Frustrated and speechless, Zachary replied, "Listen to my words carefully. I said 'pretend' to give up."
"I'm not going to pretend, either." Trevor made his point in a determined manner.
Zachary paused and shrugged his shoulders. "In that case, I guess our discussion isn't going to take us anywhere."
While Trevor silently puffed on his cigarette, Kaleb raised his hand and said, "I have an idea too." Upon hearing his response, Trevor and Zachary looked at Kaleb, who couldn't help but feel a little stressed by their stare. However, he soon cleared his throat and went on to say, "Why don't you pretend to suffer from an injury that gives you amnesia? Here is how the story is going to be—you can only remember nothing later than the time you and Emma were still husband and wife while we make the necessary arrangements in the hospital for you two to spend some private moments together. After some time, I believe she'll fall in love with you again."
Before Trevor could respond, Zachary expressed his disagreement with Kaleb. "Come on. Did you get that idea from one of those lousy dramas? How could you suggest something so absurd as a doctor?"
Kaleb spoke for himself in defense. "Well, scientifically speaking, it is possible for an amnesiac to suffer from a loss of memory, either wholly or partly, although the chances for that to happen are rather slim in reality."
As Zachary was about to say something, Trevor stubbed his cigarette and replied, "This idea could work."
Zachary was speechless when he heard Trevor's response. What's wrong with Trevor? Is he out of his mind? How on earth does pretending to be an amnesiac sound like a good idea to him? That's ridiculous! In the meantime, Trevor walked away as soon as he stubbed his cigarette in the ashtray on top of the dumpster, only to feel Kaleb seizing his arm nervously. "Don't tell me you're going to put yourself through amnesia by getting knocked down by a car?"
Trevor glimpsed his concerned friend in an annoyed manner and gritted his teeth. "Relax, I'm not so desperate to try that yet." As his words suggested, he had no intention of faking his amnesia anytime soon.
It was only then that Kaleb let go of him in relief. "Phew! You gave me a scare. I'm not ready to see you try anything silly."
As Trevor walked toward his car, Zachary kept his hands in his pockets and clicked his tongue with a sigh. "Love is really something 'magical', isn't it? To think of how it can make a man like him so edgy and desperate." After all, he didn't expect Trevor's setback to push him so much that he had to fake his amnesia just to win back Emma's heart.
Kaleb rolled his eyes at Zachary and said, "You know what? That's something a playboy like you will
never understand because if you ever do one day, you'll probably end up worse than he does." Kaleb walked away as soon as he finished his words, leaving Zachary behind to wonder what he was trying to tell him. However, Zachary soon shrugged his shoulders in an unconcerned manner because he had never truly fallen in love with anyone.
Meanwhile, Emma initially had no idea that Wesley was back in Jonestown until she got a call from him later that night. Over the phone, she could hear the man's weak voice as he said, "I'm back, Emma. I wanted to head over to your place, but it appears that I've fallen ill."
"Are you alright?" Emma asked in a concerned manner.
Wesley struggled to talk amidst his coughing. "I-I'm having a fever now, which I think is because I pushed myself too far with my overly demanding schedule…"
When Emma heard that Wesley was down with a fever, she became anxious and worried about him. "I'll come over and visit you right now." She then got up from her seat and proceeded to pack her clothes, thinking Wesley's fever was no laughing matter as he needed someone to look after him by his side.
"Thank you…" Wesley could feel his body succumbing to his illness, but when Emma said she would come over to visit him, he heaved a sigh of relief but felt like he was about to faint. However, he kept himself together and hung in there, using all his energy to tell Emma his wish. "By the way, please bring Kitty with you. I'm afraid it'll bully Minne when you're away." Upon hearing Wesley's words, Emma didn't know what she could say. Oh, come on, Wesley! You have a high fever, so why are you still worried about your cats when you should be worried about yourself more instead? In fact, Kitty had been getting along well with Minnie for the past few days as it was mild-
mannered and approachable, just like its owner. However, Emma believed Wesley must have missed his pet cat so dearly that he wanted to see them, so she agreed to bring Kitty along and went on to hang up the call. After dressing up, she left home with the cat but not before bringing along some paracetamol and some other medicines she thought would be useful with her.
Nevertheless, Emma didn't expect that she would be caught by the paparazzi on camera, but fortunately, her ordinary-looking outfit was able to disguise and hide her face well from exposure as the paparazzi only managed to capture her silhouette. As soon as she entered Wesley's house, she immediately tended to the sick man by first feeding him paracetamol. Then, she asked if he had eaten and proceeded to make him some chicken soup in order to improve and increase his appetite. By the time Emma was done with all the trouble of tending to Wesley, it was already close to midnight. When she took a look at the time, she was surprised to realize the clock had already struck 11.00PM. Although she wanted to leave, she couldn't bring herself to do so because Wesley's fever still hadn't subsided as the man was in a deep sleep.
