Chapter 26. Regrets

Noah POV

I was looking at Briana while Hanna dragged her away and felt a sense of unexplainable loss.

I shook my head, not understanding myself anymore.

I hated her. I knew that.

But as I watch her leave, why does it feel like something is squeezing my gut?

“I thought you hated her.”

Britney’s voice intruded into the mess in my head.

Detecting a hint of pain in her voice, I could not help but wince.

“What are you doing here?” I asked harshly.

Britney flinched. She looked taken aback, and I realized I had been aggressive with her.

I felt sorry for her.

In all the years we had been together, I had always been patient with her, just as she was patient with me.

She understood what I had gone through.

I sighed.

“I am sorry,” I said wearily, brushing my hair back for want of doing something.

My hands missed holding Briana, and I itch to run after her to

continue what we have started.

Britney must have sensed the way my mind was going when she intruded, yet again into my thoughts.

“Your uncle had been asking about you. You left me alone there.” Censure laced Britney’s voice.

I should have been guilty of leaving her at the ballroom alone, but I am not. Britney is a grown woman. She had been dealing with people due to the nature of her career. She knows her way around social gatherings.

She can easily navigate her way through a crowd if she wants to.

“Go home Brit,” I told her dismissively, using her nickname to take the sting out of my words.

But it did not stop the tears that brimmed her eyes. I could have felt a little sympathetic toward her, but I couldn’t.

How could I when every compartment that belonged to my head had been occupied by Briana lately?

Britney’s shoulders started to shake.

I sighed in exasperation.

“We broke up. There is no reason for us to hang around each other anymore.” I explained, hoping my words would get through her.

I have to be honest with myself. I don’t love Britney.

I did once, but not anymore.

Having Briana in my arms tonight proved that my feelings for Britney had died a long time ago.

“You can’t do this to me, Noah.” Britney cried.

I winced, hearing the pain in her voice, but I could not do anything about it. My feelings have changed, and it would be foolish to stay.

Without replying to Britney, I marched out of the rooftop. I wanted to find Briana.

I controlled myself and stopped short when I saw her with Marcus Ford as an indescribable ache filled my chest. My lungs feel stuffy,

and I feel suffocated.

I watched while another man took care of Briana, and jealousy filled me.

It should have been me!

My hands clenched into fists when I realized Briana never loved

  1. me. She did not want me.

If she did, she would not be having an affair with another man. She would not be plotting that accident that killed my parents and nearly cost my life.

Then, as if I culled her face in my memory, I remembered the fire I saw in her eyes earlier when she talked about revenge. She was

so angry.

That made me pause.

As I watched their car move along to join the nighttime traffic, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called Brent.

“What can I do for you, boss?” He greeted me jokingly, but I was not in the mood.

“Stop it, or I will downgrade your salary.” I threatened.

He laughed. “What made you so mad?” He inquired.

“I need a favor.”

“Shoot.”

“Can you investigate the accident involving my parents and me?” This content provided by N(o)velDrama].[Org.

Brent sighed. “Are you having your dots now?”

I took a deep breath.

“I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. It was something. denied her five years ago. I honestly told my friend, referring to Briana without saying her name.

I did not have to clarify. Brent understood what I meant.

“I already had the report. I will send it to you now.” He told me.

That surprised me. My phone notified me of an incoming email, and I read it.

Regret filled me instantly, and right after, I called Brent back.

“Why didn’t you tell me there was no evidential proof against Briana?”

“You were so angry. Do you think you will be willing to listen to the state of your anger? Besides, Briana had disappeared right after. I did not think it would change anything.”
