Chapter 6
It’s Sunday afternoon, and Emerald is in her room trying to get some rest. She just finished doing the laundry while cleaning the house, and she doesn’t feel well. Jace left the other day and has not come back, and she was praying that he would never come back until she got some rest. But her prayer wasn’t answered because after a few more minutes, her room door burst open, and her angry husband emerged.
“Is that what you do while I’m away? Resting?” he asked angrily.
“I just finished the laundry and cleaned the house,” Emerald replied in a weak voice as she got up from her bed, which didn’t go unnoticed by Jace. He creased his forehead as he started walking closer to her.
“Don’t tell me you’re sick!” he shouted.Property of Nô)(velDr(a)ma.Org.
“No, I was resting briefly because I wanted to go to Nanny Lucy later.”
“And who the hell was that?” Jace asked, raising a brow.
“She’s my nanny who has cared for me since childhood. She has been in the hospital for a long time, and no one has been looking after her except me.”
Jace grabbed her by her arm before pulling her closer to him, “Make sure that you’re not seeing another man. Because if you do, I am going to hire men to gang rape you. Do you understand?” he said, pushing her down and turning his back to his wife.
Emerald felt scared because of that. Even though she had no plan on seeing another man, she still kept Jace’s words in mind out of fear. Still on her knees, she cries in silence because that’s all she can do. For her, she has no power or any means to fight her husband.
Thinking she would never get the rest she wanted, Emerald stood up and prepared to leave. She wanted to see her nanny to check on her condition. When she got down, she found Jace in the living room with a glass of alcohol in his hand. She didn’t know whether she would tell her husband or not, but thinking he would get mad at her whether she told him or not, she decided to let him know that she was going to leave.
“I’ll be in the hospital for a couple of hours and will get back before dinner,” she said. Jace didn’t bother looking at her and motioned his hand, which was holding the alcohol, to just leave. Emerald turned and left.
In the hospital, Lucy was in her hospital bed unconscious while Emerald looked at her. The scene of her nanny getting to this situation flashed in her mind.
It was Sunday morning, and she got into the mansion after watering the plants in the garden when she heard her mother shouting and found her nanny rolling down the stairs. They sent her to the hospital, where she was taken care of. According to the doctor, she was fine and would get better once she rested and took her medications. Emerald believed that, so she did all the household chores that her nanny had to finish to get the rest she needed.
But after a month, she got sick, so the young Morgan asked her father to bring Lucy to the hospital again. Her mother, Merly, got mad and said it wasn’t their obligation to send her nanny or give her medical attention. Because Emerald really wanted to make her nanny better, she begged and kneeled before them so they would help her.
Emerose, being wicked, agreed, but Emerald had to do everything she said. With no other choice, young Morgan accepted the condition. So, whenever her family needed something from her, they would call her and make her do something they couldn’t. What Emerald has been thankful for was that they never go beyond physical and mental abuse. She’s strong enough to get through all beatings and, with her eyes closed, accept all the abusive words they throw at her.
Emerald sighed after thinking about her family and whether that’s what they should be called. For her, she was not their family, and it always made her feel heartbroken. Then Jace came into her life. When he chose her, she thought it was the beginning of her new life-a life wherein someone would be there for her-someone whom she would take care of and, at the same time, would take care of her.
Unknowingly, Emerald wipes her tears dry. Then she looks at her wristwatch and remembers that she has to go home. “I am going to come back, Nanny Lu,” she says before she kisses her nanny’s forehead.
As the young Morgan left the hospital room, she suddenly felt dizzy and leaned on the wall with her eyes closed to give her time to stabilize herself.
After a few minutes, she steadied herself and started walking. But before she reached the elevator, her eyesight became blurry, and dizziness struck again before she lost consciousness.
Meanwhile, in the mansion, Jace was in his study room talking to his assistant on a video call through his laptop when his phone rang. He wanted to ignore it because it was from an unknown number, but the caller didn’t stop calling. He excused himself to Nolan before he pressed the answer button.
“Hello,” Jace said. ‘This better be important because if not, I’ll make sure whoever this caller is will suffer severely.’ He thought.
“Is this the husband of Ms. Emerald Morgan?” the caller asked, making Jace furrowed his brow. He loosened his tie in annoyance before he answered.
“What about her?”
“This is the nurse from Poveda Hospital, where Ms. Emerald was admitted and unconscious.” Jace felt worried and ended his meeting with his assistant. He didn’t understand why he felt that way, didn’t think about it, and rushed to the hospital.
While Jace is on his way, Emerald regains her consciousness. “Hello, I’m Dr. Sanders. How are you feeling?”
Emerald, still thinking about where she was and what had happened, looked at the smiling doctor. “What happened?” she asked.
“I found you unconscious in the hallway near the elevator.”
“Oh, yeah. I suddenly felt dizzy.” She replied.
“So, how are you feeling?”
“A little better than earlier,” Emerald answered before her eyes widened. “Am I still in the hospital? I need to go home!”
“Wait, you’re not well yet. You had a high fever earlier, and we still don’t know if you hit your head on the floor after you fell when you lost consciousness. You still need a CT.”
“Can we do that later? I need to go home.” Emerald said in a low voice. She couldn’t tell the doctor about Jace getting angry if she was late.
“Still, I have to check you first. We give you paracetamol to lower your fever.”
“But I need to go.” Emerald insisted.
“Okay, but take my card. Just in case you feel anything, give me a call,” the doctor replied. Emerald took the card and put it in her pocket exactly when Jace entered her hospital room.
“Jace!” She exclaimed. “What are you doing here?”
“Why should I not?” Higginson asked, looking at her and then at Dr. Sanders. He didn’t like the idea of another man talking to his wife.
“No, it’s just…” Emerald replied but couldn’t find a word to continue.
“If you’re done here, let’s go,” Jace said, pulling her up.
“Excuse me, she’s not well yet. There’s some test that needs to be done,” Dr. Sanders said, but Jace stopped him.
“Are you not feeling well?” asked Jace, his eyes were on his wife.
“No, I am fine now,” Emerald replied with her head down. She didn’t want her husband to think anything out of fear that he would punish her.
“Then let’s go.” Then he turned his back. Emerald got up from her hospital bed and was about to follow her husband, but Dr. Sanders stopped them.
“What is it?” Jace asked annoyingly.
“I am going to give Ms. Emerald a prescription. She’s overfatigued and needs complete rest, so I will also give her vitamins.”
“Then do it now!” Higginson replied. He doesn’t know why he hates the doctor even though he isn’t doing anything. It could be because of the way Sanders looks at his wife. Jace instantly knew that he liked her.
After giving his prescription, young Higginson took it and pulled Emerald out of the hospital. In the car, they were quiet, and young Morgan didn’t know whether she would start a conversation. In the end, she decided to apologize. “I’m sorry for taking your time, Jace. This will not happen again.”
“Shut your fucking mouth!” Jace shouted. He was furious; he couldn’t forget the kind of smile that Dr. Doctor Sanders gave to his wife when he handed her the prescription.
‘No, I am not jealous. I was pissed because another man had fallen into Emerald’s charm the way Jack did. Yeah, that’s all.’ Jace thought.
