I will always be with you

“Fuck, no.” I cursed in frustration as a guy abruptly breezed past me, causing me to drop my wallet on the floor which made everything inside it pour out on the floor.

“Hey, watch where you are going.” I yelled after him but he didn’t even bother to look in my direction.

Stupid brat, I seethed, darting his retreating back a glare before I averted my focus back to my wallet.

“Are you alright?” Katie asked, crouching down beside me and helping me grab my stuff from the floor.

“Yeah, I’m alright.” I affirmed, getting up from the floor and dusting my wallet.

“Woah, you have a black card?” Katie gasped as I slid the plastic card into my wallet, and I just nodded in response as my thoughts strayed to Roman for the nth time that day.

It had been two days since his abrupt confession and I still couldn’t bring myself to look at him because something within me thought I didn’t deserve to be loved at all, much less by a handsome billionaire like him.

Even though I mostly replied to all his questions and statements in monosyllables, he didn’t seem to mind it, he even told me that he was fine with anything as long as I still responded to him. He never failed to confess his undying love to me everyday despite the fact that he knew I would only answer him with an “ok.”

I badly wanted to reciprocate his love without holding back but my inferiority complex wasn’t letting me get a breather at all, and I was worried Roman would eventually get bored of me and realize that he never truly loved me and move on with a more deserving woman like the woman I had met in his office.

“Earth to you, Sofie.” Katie flicked her fingers in front of me, jolting me out of my reverie.

“What?” I muttered, eying her akimbo pose.

“You’ve been out of it for about five minutes now, what are you thinking about?”

I smiled sheepishly, “Nothing much.”

Katie clearly didn’t believe me but I guessed she’d learnt to let me be if I didn’t wish to tell her what was on my mind.

“Your fiancé must be really wealthy and in love with you for you to casually possess a black card. I heard the waiting period for a black card is nearly up to a year and that you must also have several millions of dollars in your account before you’re considered for one.” She rambled on, to which I nodded.

I still hadn’t used the black card since Roman gave it to me two weeks ago. I didn’t want him to think I was a money-grubbing thief who was overtly greedy for his money.

I was quite satisfied with the money he’d given me before our contract began.

“Oh really? I didn’t know that.” I muttered.

“I figured. Anyway, I’m heading home, you know you still haven’t visited me in my apartment.” Katie accused me and I chuckled lightly.

“I’ll pay you a surprise visit very soon.” I reassured her, to which she huffed before giving me a short wave.

“Take care, babe.”

“I will, you too.”

Afterward, I went to sit underneath an oak tree, waiting for Roman’s driver to come pick me up.

My hands unconsciously spread over my abdomen and I inhaled deeply, I still hadn’t told Roman about my pregnancy, I rarely even spoke with him nowadays, so how was I supposed to begin a serious conversation with him?

I knew I was due for a visit to the obstetrician’s office soon but it saddened me that I’d have to go alone without anyone to support me and assure me that everything would be fine in the end.

Pregnancy wasn’t something I could hide for so long because with time, a baby bump would eventually form and when we got intimate, Roman would see how swollen my abdomen had become.

Before that happened, I had to muster up enough courage to inform him about our baby.

Our.

Thinking about it like that made me giddy with elation, and the realization that I was really carrying a child that was half-me and half-him heightened my excitement.

A smile curved my lips as I thought about it but my smile slowly dissipated when I saw Nathan walking toward me.

What was he doing here? I thought as I sprang up from the bench.

Did something happen?

“Miss Sofie.” He said as soon as he got to me. His demeanor oozed slight despondence which confirmed my fears that something terrible must have happened.

“Nathan, is everything okay? Why are you here instead of the driver?” I asked, my voice breaking at the end.

“The chairwoman collapsed earlier today and is currently in the ICU recuperating.” He started, and I gasped in shock.

My heart instantly broke for Roman because Nana was his only family left.

“What? My goodness, where’s Roman? How is he holding up?”

“He’s currently in the hospital, and he asked me to inform you but he said I shouldn’t force you to come with me if you don’t want to.”

“What does he mean by that? Of course, I’ll go with you.” I said and he nodded.

We headed to the car and got inside before Nathan drove us to the hospital. My heart hammered against my chest in trepidation and I fidgeted with my hands out of restlessness throughout the short trip to the hospital.

“This way, ma’am.” Nathan said as we stepped into the hospital.

My heart broke again as I beheld the vulnerable sight of Roman, he was seated at the reception area with his head buried in between his hands.

“I’ll park the car properly.” Nathan muttered before walking away.

With slow, tentative steps, I trekked up to Roman and quietly sat down beside him.

He tilted his head sideways and his eyes widened slightly as he eyed me, “You are here.” He whispered, disbelief conspicuous in his voice.

In spite of our sour relationship, I flashed him a smile, “In flesh and blood.”

He mirrored my smile, “Thanks for coming, cara. I really mean it.”

Placing my hand on his, I nodded, “You’re welcome, I know you mean it.”

He seemed shocked as he stared down at my hand, “How’s Nana doing now?” I asked, averting his focus to my face.

“She woke up some minutes ago, she has been moved to the general ward, and she also asked to see you as soon as you get here.” Roman replied as he stood up.

I nodded, also getting up. “Thank goodness.”

“Shall we?” He stretched out a hand to me and I smiled as I slipped mine into his.

“Sure.” I smiled as he intertwined our hands.

With our locked hands, he drew me closer, and pressed a kiss to my forehead before grinning down at me and leading the way.

I tried not to blush as we walked through the hospital hallways, with Roman intervally darting me tender stares.
